Darren's delight

DARREN Patterson saluted his players – and especially his midfielders – for sticking to their guns last night as they stunned in-form Torquay by taking a point away from Plainmoor.

Phil Trainer's 89th-minute goal brought United a precious away point.

And the U's boss said the way his central midfielders stayed brave on the ball and kept feeding it out to the wide players turned the game.

Like all the Oxford United fans, though, Patterson was frustrated that a point didn't become three because Yemi Odubade was tripped in the box in stoppage time – yet the ref ignored it.

"It was a stonewall penalty, I've seen the replay on TV," said United's manager afterwards.

"I'm not going to go mental about it, but it seemed a clear-cut one."

Midfielder Adam Murray insisted: "We should have had two penalties in the game, so a draw is the least we deserved."

But Patterson preferred to concentrate on the good things to come from his team, who have now built on two good home wins.

He said: "In the second half we started to stretch the pitch with our two wide players.

"Our two central midfielders remained brave on the ball and we kept getting it out wide – that was key to me."

Torquay's goal, on 21 minutes, was not so clever, however, with the U's not picking up centre half Chris Robertson, who bundled in a corner.

Patterson said: "It was such a simple, basic goal to concede. Other than that they didn't really trouble us, even though they're on a good run and are the in-form team in the league.

"Their second balls were much better than us, but we hung in there.

"Our front two were working their socks off, but it wasn't really working for them. But we have to appreciate, they're getting match-fitter.

"It was having the two quick lads, Lewis (Haldane) and Yemi (Odubade), go up front which caused them a lot of problems.

"There's a good spirit in the camp and seeing Phil Trainer score in virtually the 90th minute shows we're getting match-fitter all the time."

Murray said: "We came out in the second half and dominated the play, created chances and really deserved at least a draw. Their keeper's pushed one onto the bar and there were two definite penalties we should have had.

"But we've got to be pleased with how we played."

GREAT PERFORMANCE SECOND HALF BUT THEY NEED TO GET GOING FROM THE START. ALSO WE HAVE TO MOVE THE BALL ON THE FLOOR MORE AND NOT THESE ENDLESS LONG BALLS TO CONSTABLE & GUY WHO WANT THE BALL TO FEET.

In the second half it was like watching a completely different side - we need to take this approach into the next game. Not sure I understood the Guy substitution - although Deering made a difference. I just think it should have been a midfield swap. The goal came from a set piece - but I could not see how we were going to get a goal from open play without 'out and out' strikers on the pitch.

I thought we were the better side from about 30 mins into the game. Still tho we get anywhere near the box and the players legs turn to jelly and lose the ability to pass the ball to a man in the same shirt.

We could still be playing now and we wouldn't score a goal in open play. We may have strikers but we don't have goalscorers. Constable works very hard but will only get you 10 to 15 goals. Jamie Guy well I think hes just another Gary Twigg to be honest. Bigged up by the manager to be the player who can score 20 goals plus and to be honest looks like he only got introduced to a football in the summer.

A good away draw but also the game highlighted alot of ongoing problems and players who we need to drop.

Frankly speaking

We will never win anything unless our basic ball control improves. I watch the local kids of 8 or 9 take and trap a ball consistently. How many times did we fail to do this last night resulting in giving away posession?

On the formation side I think we should go 4-1-2-2-1. Four across the back, 1 in a Makelele role, 2 in central midfield, Haldane and Yemi wide and pushed up a bit(the way Haldane tracked back at speed on one occasion last night was a big plus point for me), Guy up front. Young Sam to come on as an impact player when required, Constable to replace Guy if the opposition defence is tall and strong.

The first half was pretty poor, the second half was better but I'm not getting carried away like some people seem to be because we have seen this all before. It all boils down to consistency

A good fight back. Trainer is turning into a good player. However, the team badly needs some goals scored by the forwards. That is their prim purpose for being there, craate and score goals. God luck on Sunday with the hope that the forwards manage a few goals.

Another excellent performance in front of the setanta cameras! I thought Oxford were going to grab a winner towards the end - they were the better side in the second half by a long way. Keep it up.

We were - Definately - robbed of a much deserved win.. Two penalty claims 'missed' by the otherwise proficient ref - The one on Yemi was blatantly a foul in the penalty area! I hope it's true that these decisions even out over a season- if so we are 'owed' some very dodgy referreing decisions in our favour! None the less, a welcome point and IF we can follow it up by winning at Altrincham.. it would set up next saturdays' clash with Nigel Cloughs Burton a treat, and also the gate would be bolstered?

Thought Oxford deserved a result without really playing that well I thought though Oxford need to use the midfield better as oxford's go wide and then bang it long needs to be tailored a bit better although to be fair Oxford made Toquay look very ordinary without playing that well which is always a good sign. few changes I would make is possible try to use Phil Trainer better who looked quality so needs to get better ball maybe play three up with him and yemi either side of Constable to use that long ball better (asuming they play in the same way) but if they can be tight at the back they will move up the league. Thought Jamie Guy needs to managed better looked un-fit maybe bring him on last 30mins was hoping to go to the Alty game but can't now
